Options for Care: Emergency Department vs. Urgent Care

Published on Tuesday January 28, 2025

If you ever find yourself in need of medical care unexpectedly, it’s good to know where to go to get the help you need quickly! Understanding the differences between an emergency department (ED) and an urgent care facility can really make a difference. Each option has its own strengths, so let’s take a look at what’s available in our community. This way, when that sudden need arises, you'll know exactly where to turn for the right treatment!

The Emergency Department

The emergency department (ED) is here to provide you with care whenever you need it, day or night, for serious or life-threatening medical issues. Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) is one of 19 trauma centers in Virginia and holds the distinction of being one of seven Level II trauma centers. We're proud to offer support for a variety of moderately severe injuries and work alongside other fantastic facilities like Bedford Memorial Hospital, Southside Community Hospital, and Gretna Medical Center.

When should you consider visiting the ED? Here are some situations that may call for our immediate attention:

  • Mental health crises
  • Chest pain
  • Strokes
  • Extremely high fevers
  • Severe trauma
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Head injuries
  • Pediatric emergencies

"The ED is always available for patients, especially when other care options are unavailable," said James Bryant, Vice President of Emergency Services at Centra.

Remember, our emergency department is designed for those urgent situations where you need quick and specialized medical care. We're here for you!

Urgent Care

If you’re dealing with a non-life-threatening illness or injury, urgent care centers are a great, convenient, and budget-friendly alternative to going to the Emergency Department. Here are some common situations where urgent care can help:

  • Colds, the flu, or a persistent cough
  • Low-grade fevers
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Sprains and minor fractures
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Mild allergic reactions and rashes

Urgent care is a wonderful way to fill the gap between your regular doctor and emergency services. Not only do they take care of these issues, but they also provide minor procedures like stitches, abscess drainage, and wound care.

At Centra, our urgent care centers are here for you every day from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our Farmville Urgent Care facility is available Monday through Saturday during the same hours, ready to assist you whenever needed!
