Modernization Plan

Inspiring Hope. Building on Our Legacy. Modernizing Where We Care.

Modernizing where we care

Centra’s Modernization Plan is a multi-year initiative that will encompass the most significant facility improvements and capital investments in Centra’s 36-year history. Aligning with our long-term Strategic Plan, this 500-million-dollar investment is multi-faceted and will address different needs found within our community based on findings from our 2021 Community Health Needs Assessment, and will come to life with the assistance of our joint ventures, operations, bonds and in partnership with the Centra Foundation and our generous donors.

As a part of this initiative, we are excited to announce the following:

Remote patient monitoring

With the launch of our new Central Command Center, we are enhancing our virtual care and telehealth programs to provide 24/7 access to care and support allowing us to expand care beyond the hospital or clinic setting and meet patients where they are.

Through our remote patient monitoring program, we will be able to:

  • Increase quality of care
  • Manage patient’s health and well-being
  • Help patients avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and trips to the emergency department
Modernization

New care tower

To accommodate the growing number of patients who need inpatient care at Lynchburg General, a new five-story care tower will be constructed. This new tower, Tower A, will be located adjacent to Tower B and consist of medical units, patient recovery rooms, support spaces and shell space for future growth and capacity.

Tower A will also house a new Labor & Delivery Unit, Mother/Baby Unit, and Intensive Care Nursery specifically designed to serve the needs of today’s families and will incorporate best practices in facility design, care models and technology that will enhance Mother/Baby services for years to come.

New Emergency Department at Lynchburg General

Our current emergency department will be replaced and incorporated as part of the new care tower. It will be designed to allow for additional flexibility and expansion needs in the future.

This exciting new facility will significantly meet the needs of our ever-changing community and will include:

  • 71 treatment bays
  • Five trauma bays
  • Four imaging rooms
  • An integrated emPATH psychiatric patient space
  • A split flow model of care to expedite and enhance patient experience of care
  • Super track, imaging and results lounge, and improved connectivity and utilization of the ED observation unit

Lynchburg General campus parking & wayfinding

The active expansion of lots on Thomson Drive and Tate Springs Road will create 428 additional parking spaces. These new spaces are intended to bring all patient and visitor parking for the Emergency Department and inpatient services to the front of the building enabling ease of access and simplified navigation of our campus.

Phase One of this work was completed in January 2024 and next phase of this work began in June 2024. The map below provides guidance on the current state of parking and lots that are available for patient and visitor use!

Additionally, modernization of the wayfinding experience inside LGH is currently underway. Please excuse our temporary signage as we make updates to better serve you.

Each tower at Lynchburg General Hospital is designated with a letter. Signs throughout the building will help guide you.

  • Tower B (formerly known as the East Tower)
  • Tower C (formerly known as the South Tower)
  • Tower D (formerly known as the North Tower)
  • The new care tower which is scheduled to be completed in late 2027 will be called Tower A.

Updated ED Traffic Pattern

Beginning June 17, 2024, in preparation for the construction of the new emergency department and care tower, there will be a new traffic pattern for the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital (LGH) Emergency Department. The existing road for entrance/exit will be closed to patient/visitor traffic. A new traffic pattern for entering and exiting the ED parking lot has been established further down Tate Springs Road on the left. There will be directional signage for the new entrance and exit. This new traffic pattern will remain in place for much of the construction of the care tower.

There are also free shuttle stops for patients and visitors located across the LGH Campus to help you reach the entrances of the hospital along with parking lots.

Centra Langhorne Medical Center

The new Centra Langhorne Medical Center is planned to better support the services that Centra provides to our community. The five-story medical office building will be located near Lynchburg General Hospital’s campus and will streamline access to healthcare services and house specialty care including Centra’s comprehensive Brain and Spine programs and other surgical specialists.

Members of the Centra Leadership Team along with our partners for the project, Remedy Medical Properties, Robins & Morton, the Haskell Company and Hurt & Proffitt, celebrated the groundbreaking for the new facility in March 2024.

New medical campus

In partnership with Lifepoint Health, Centra plans to construct two new facilities to create a new specialty medical campus on Simon’s Run. The new facilities will replace inpatient units currently housed at Virginia Baptist Hospital (VBH).

  • The Centra Behavioral Health Hospital will be an approximately 75,000 square-foot, 72-bed hospital, providing inpatient services for adults struggling with mental health illnesses. This new facility will be structurally designed to create a therapeutic environment for patient healing.
  • The Centra Rehabilitation Hospital inpatient facility will be a modern, full-service 50-bed inpatient facility. Designed with a patient-centered focus, this hospital will provide a state-of-the-art environment for care.
