Our Emergency Mental Health Consultation Services at Lynchburg General Hospital's emergency department provide 24-hour crisis intervention for urgent, life-threatening situations.
A psychiatric emergency is a sudden, unexpected occurrence demanding immediate action. For example, when general functioning becomes so severely impaired that the person is a danger to himself and/or others, then immediate attention is needed. Physicians in the emergency department, along with the expertise of mental health professionals and our psychiatric staff, perform risk assessments for depression, chemical dependence, child or adolescent problems, and dementia before determining the most appropriate recommendation for care.
