Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories (CCL) Cardiovascular Surgery Program (CVS) Cardiovascular Recovery Unit (CVRU) Coronary Care Unit (CCU) Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (PCCU) Cardiac Treatment Center (CTC) Diagnostic ServicesCardiac Rehabilitation Services (CRS) Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation (PH & R)Pacemaker Clinic Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories (CCL) Patients with suspected coronary artery disease may be scheduled for a cardiac catheterization. This allows doctors to view the chambers, valves and coronary arteries in the heart to determine if there are blockages or other problems.
In addition to diagnostic testing, these therapeutic procedures are performed in the cardiac catheterization labs:
Coronary angioplasty is a procedure in which a balloon is inserted into the artery and expanded to widen it. An atherectomy removes coronary atheroma using a cutter device. After an angioplasty or atherectomy, doctors sometimes place coronary stents in the arteries to hold them open. Electrophysiology tests help locate the origin and nature of disturbances in the rhythm of the heart.
The new cardiac catheterization suite contains two procedure laboratories with new X-ray equipment, including a digital X-ray tube, which provides enhanced image quality and storage capabilities.
We also expanded our holding and recovery areas to provide increased privacy for patients and maximum efficiency for staff.Cardiovascular Surgery Program (CVS) Patients with severe blockages of major coronary arteries—or those suffering from other serious heart problems—may need open heart surgery. Coronary artery bypass grafts, surgery to repair or replace defective heart valves, insertion of automatic cardiac internal defibrillators and atrial septal defect repairs are just a few of the procedures we perform.
Cardiovascular Recovery Unit (CVRU) The six-bed cardiovascular recovery unit provides intensive nursing and medical care to patients for 24-48 hours after their cardiac surgery. The surgeon and a skilled recovery team continuously monitor the patient's heart rate and rhythm, blood pressure and other vital signs.
Coronary Care Unit (CCU) The 12-bed acute coronary care unit provides intensive, highly specialized care to patients suffering from heart attacks, heart rhythm disturbances, unstable angina and other cardiac problems that require constant monitoring. This is also where our staff cares for post-angioplasty patients.
Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (PCCU) Patients transfer to this "step down" unit from the cardiovascular recovery unit to continue their recuperation after heart surgery. This is also where we admit patients recovering from heart attacks or requiring cardiac monitoring by telemetry for other cardiac problems.
Cardiac Treatment Center (CTC) Cardiac inpatients and outpatients receive non-invasive diagnostic testing and rehabilitation services in our Cardiac Treatment Center at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Diagnostic ServicesExercise stress testing allows patients to exercise in a controlled environment under the supervision of medical personnel, revealing problems not apparent while the patient is at rest.Nuclear stress testing reveals patterns of blood flow and examines the heart's pumping ability. The hospital's dedicated nuclear camera also allows for additional nuclear stress testing. Dipyridamole stress testing is a specialized test for people unable to exercise.
Cardiac Rehabilitation Services (CRS) Cardiac Rehabilitation Services (CRS) is a monitored exercise program for people who have had a recent heart attack, bypass surgery or angioplasty. The program helps patients return to and active life and make needed lifestyle changes. A cardiac nurse therapist monitors each patient during exercise and provides a risk factor and stress management education to help modify lifestyle for better health.
Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation (PH & R)Pulmonary Health and Rehabilitation provides guidance to patients with pulmonary problems.Pacemaker Clinic The pacemaker clinic checks pacemaker operation over the telephone.
