The Emergency Department
Our 24-hour emergency department (ED) serves seriously injured or ill patients who require immediate medical care. Urgent Care Plus at Lynchburg General Hospital is available for patients who need medical attention but who do not require critical care. Click here for more information.

Critical Care Units
Patients who are seriously ill or injured may be admitted to one of the hospital's critical care units. Each specially designed unit includes highly skilled staff and specialized equipment to provide patients comprehensive medical care.

These units include:

NICU (Neurological Intensive Care Unit) is for patients with head injuries or neurological disorders.
CCU (Coronary Care Unit) is for patients who have experienced a heart attack or have been admitted to the hospital with chest pain or heart disease.
SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit) is for patients needing specialized surgery or who have experienced major trauma.
MICU (Intensive Care Unit) is for patients with serious medical problems.

Don't be alarmed by the equipment, the many beeps and alarms you may hear, or the many medical personnel you see in these areas. They are all necessary to care for our patients in these units.

Orthopedics
Our orthopedic staff performs more than 200 different orthopedic procedures, including knee and hip replacement surgery, arthroscopic surgery, and rotator cuff repair. After surgery, our rehabilitation program supports patients as they begin their road to recovery.

Neurosurgery and Neurology
Neurosurgery and Neurology are also cornerstone programs at Lynchburg General Hospital. Each year, approximately 450 neurosurgery procedures are performed. Patients with more serious neurological problems are treated in our NICU (Neurological Intensive Care Unit). This unit is designed for patients requiring special nursing care and equipment for their recovery. Patients in the unit typically are recovering from head injuries, accidents, falls and other trauma, brain tumors, seizures, cerebral aneurysms or carotid endarterectomies.

Medical And Surgical Units
Lynchburg General Hospital offers specific units for patients who are undergoing orthopedic surgery and have pulmonary, diabetic and renal conditions, but who do not require intensive care. Like all our other units, they are staffed by nurses specifically trained to care for you and your particular illness or injury.

Laboratory Services
Laboratory tests, performed by our pathologists and technicians, help diagnose your illness and monitor your recovery. The laboratory Blood Bank processes blood used for treatment. Most of the blood is collected by the American Red Cross and sent to our hospital. In some cases, individuals may have donated their own blood for elective surgery. In all cases, there is no charge for the blood itself. Fees are charged only to cover the cost of processing, testing and administering the blood.

Radiology
Our radiology department offers a full line of diagnostic and intervention services, including specialties such as:

CT scanning
Nuclear medicine
Ultrasound
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Mammography
Angiography

Our highly skilled radiology technologists perform all procedures, and our board-certified radiologists interpret the results, which are shared with your physician.

Therapy Services
Lynchburg General Hospital's physical therapists use specific exercise, gait weight training, heat, cold, muscle stimulation, wound care, whirlpool, and other special treatments to help patients regain their highest level of mobility. Occupational therapists use specific treatments and activities to increase joint motion, muscle strength and coordination and to help patients regain their highest level of functional independence.

Respiratory Care
Registered therapists and certified technicians use mechanized breathing aids to treat patients with respiratory problems. They also administer inhaled medications and oxygen and perform diagnostic testing and ventilator care.

Outpatient Services and Surgery
We also offer many hospital services on an outpatient basis, including physical therapy, respiratory care, X-rays and some types of laboratory testing and surgeries. We also provide outpatient surgery services such as oral surgery, arthroscopies and other minor orthopedic surgeries within the hospital's Surgicare Department.

Social Services
Social Services provides guidance and counseling to help you and your family cope with the stress of hospitalization. Our qualified social workers assist with discharge planning and arrange for community resources including nursing homes and home health, support groups and other services.

Pastoral Care
Chaplains at Centra Health are professionally trained board certified clergy. Their primary ministry is to those patients, residents, and family members who need support throughout the journey of illness, injury, and recovery. Our chaplains serve in all areas of Centra Health facilities. Any patient or family who asks to see a chaplain will find one available around the clock. Our chaplains recognize that our patients and residents come from all walks of life and bring with them a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. We minister to each individual with sensitivity to personal beliefs and the need to be connected to one’s own faith community. Hospice of the Hills
Hospice offers nursing, emotional and spiritual support to patients and families experiencing a terminal illness. The program focuses on quality of life and home-based comfort care. A physician referral is necessary to participate in the program. For more information, please call (434) 947-3204.

Home Health
After you leave the hospital, you may need to receive additional nursing care or therapy at home. If your doctor orders home health care, we can provide you with registered nurses, home health aides, physical and occupational therapists, nutritional assistance and other services.
