Samuel P. Cardwell is retired vice chairman of Crestar Financial Corp. and Crestar Bank, now SunTrust Bank.

Cardwell also is vice chairman of the Centra Health Foundation, and serves on the advisory board of the Johnson Health Center.

He has been an active member of nearly every civic organization in central Virginia. Currently, he is chairman of the Industrial Development Authority of the City of Lynchburg, chairman of the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, and a board member of C.B. Fleet Company, STEP with Links and the Advisory Board of SunTrust Bank in Lynchburg.

Cardwell graduated from the University of Richmond and earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Virginia. He served in the U.S. Army at the Far East Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, as North Korean research analyst for Army Intelligence.
