What is Magnet?

• Magnet designation was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), an organization that was founded to recognize professional achievements of nurses, in order to recognize healthcare establishments that represent excellence in nursing.

What does Magnet designation mean to me, the consumer?

• When you choose a health care organization that is Magnet designated, then you are choosing an organization that values and actively pursues the utmost in quality consumer care.  Magnet designated facilities must adhere to strict standards of practice as defined by the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Nurse Administrators.  These best practices are developed and revised frequently based on current research and studies which leads to true, evidence-based practice.

How does a healthcare facility become magnet designated?

• In order for an organization to become designated as a Magnet facility, the organization is subjected to a very thorough review on 14 different elements, known as the 14 Forces of Magnet (Click here to see all 14 areas.)  Every four years, an organization must apply for re-designation and undergo another thorough inspection of the 14 forces.

How many health care organizations have Magnet designation?

• There are 289 Magnet designated hospitals in the United States.  At first glance, that may seem like a lot.  However, there are more than 6,000 hospitals in the United States.  So you can see what elite company you are in when you choose a Magnet designated facility to meet your healthcare needs.
